The Citizens began the Roberto Mancini era at Eastlands with a facile 2-0 win over Stoke City thanks to first half goals from Martin Petrov and Carlos Tevez. City also had goalkeeper Shay Given to thank for keeping them in the game with a string of fine saves.

Mancini later expressed his delight at having started with a win. Mancini has been promised funds in January and is expected to dip into the market for defenders. Media reports also indicate the club is interested in Sampdoria striker Pazzini.

Meanwhile Wolves play Liverpool on Boxing Day before welcoming City to Molineux on Monday. Manager Mick McCarthy's stand to field a reserve side against Manchester United was vindicated last week when his side beat Burnley 2-0.

McCarthy is expected to field the same side against Liverpool with Dave Edwards being the only absentee with a ankle injury. Andy Keogh and Michael Kightly continue to remain long-term absentees as well.
