Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez will be expecting a positive response from his side when they take on Sunderland in their next Premier League encounter this weekend. Both the teams matched each other with Peter Crouch’s goal early in the first half being the only difference. However Jermain Defoe’s goal six minutes into the second half opened the flood gates as Spurs scored four goals in space of 13 minutes with Paul Scharner chipping in with a consolation goal for Wigan. Defoe went on to score five goals before the end of the final whistle, equaling Alan Shearer and Andy Cole’s record in the Premier League. Wigan players admitted that they had played very poorly and have agreed to refund the supporters’ tickets for the game, adding that they will have to improve fast if they are to remain outside the drop zone. Meanwhile Sunderland will be looking to build on their excellent performance against Arsenal last weekend and move closer to the European spot. The Black Cats are level on points with Liverpool in the eighth place and just two points behind fifth placed Aston Villa.
With no new injury concerns, coach Steve Bruce will be optimistic that his side can provide him with a winning return to the DW Stadium, having left the club for Sunderland in the summer.
