Wigan Athletic and Newcastle United will battle it out in Premiership action coming up on Boxing Day as both teams look to break into the top 10 following creditable wins last week. Sign up with us here on Live Sport Network to catch all the live premiership action week in and week out. Last fortnight, Wigan beat Blackburn Rovers 3-0 at the JJB Stadium in what was also manager Paul Ince's last game in charge of the Ewood Park outfit. Goals from Emile Heskey, Antonio Valencia and Lee Cattermole enabled the Latics to clinch all three points and climb to the 11th position with 22 points from 17 games.
Wigan have gained a lot of fans this season with their attacking brand of football. This has been helped by the arrival of Amr Zaki, whom manager Steve Bruce wants to sign up on a permanent basis. However Bruce faces stiff competition from clubs like Everton and Chelsea who are reportedly interested in signing him from his club Zamalek. Bruce will also have a battle on his hands with his other striker Emile Heskey. The England forward is a free agent next summer and has not signed a contract as yet. Liverpool and Aston Villa are said to be interested in securing his services. Meanwhile Newcastle United climbed to the 12th spot on the league table with a surprise 2-1 win over Tottenham last week. The Magpies went ahead with Charles N'Zogbia's 11th-minute strike, but Luka Modric canceled it out in the 28th minute. Just when it appeared the match would be a draw, Damien Duff scored in the 90th minute to give the Magpies all three points.
Interim boss Joe Kinnear will certainly be happy with his side's performances of late as will the Toon Army. Kinnear though faces a stiff battle to keep star striker Michael Owen at St James' Park. The England ace has been in roaring form and is wanted by top clubs including Manchester City and Everton. Owen is yet to ink a new contract and may leave the club in the summer provided he stays fit and keeps scoring goals. Joey Barton, Alan Smith and Igancio Gonzalez continue to be absent with injuries, while Obafemi Martins will need to pass a fitness test after suffering a groin injury in his side's 3-0 win over Tottenham last fortnight.
