Wigan were fantastic in their last game against Manchester City winning 2-1 even though the City strikers led by Robinho mounted repeated attacks on their penalty area. The Latics won thanks to goals from Luis Antonio Valencia and Amr Zaki. City pulled one back through Vincent Komapny.

 

 

However the game was not without complications as referee Steve Bennett adjudged City's Javier Garrido to have brought down Wilson Palacios that resulted in a penalty. Television replays showed his decision was close to being wrong.

Wigan manager Steve Bruce though will take all the three points and will hope his side can continue to win against Boro as well.

 

 

Middlesbrough meanwhile are on a run of two straight defeats having lost 2-0 to Sunderland in the Wearside derby and then going down to West Brom 1-0 last weekend. A goal from Jonas Olsson settled the game although Boro came close on many occasions. Boro boss Gareth Southgate is without star striker Tuncay Sanli, who is out for six weeks with knee damage. His absence was clearly felt by Boro in their last two games and although Afonso Alves is good, there are no goals coming from him as yet.

To compound his worries, Southgate will also be without Emmanuel Pogatetz who was sent off after a horror tackle on Rodrigo Possebon in his side's Carling Cup game against Manchester United.
