The Latics began on a great note under new boss Roberto Martinez by defeating Aston Villa in their opening encounter. Since then they have slumped to three straight defeats; the worst being a 5-0 thumping at the hands of defending champions Manchester United.

In the process, they have also been dumped out of the Carling Cup by Blackpool. In their last game, Wigan slumped to a 2-1 away defeat at Everton with a late penalty from Leighton Baines being the difference between the two teams after a Paul Shraner goal had been canceled out by Louis Saha.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has expressed a desire to beef up his strike department, but a move for Celtic striker Scott McDonald fell through. Martinez has indicated he will try to bring McDonald to Wigan in January.

Meanwhile West Ham have endured a period of financial uncertainty and have come through it with flying colors under the steady guidance of Gianfranco Zola. The Hammers have won one game, lost one and drawn one so far.

In their last game, they were held to a 0-0 draw by Blackburn Rovers. Before the transfer window snapped shut, Zola has managed to sign Livorno forward Alessandro Diamanti on a five-year deal. He is also looking to get a swap deal done with Fiorentina for defender Manuel Da Costa in exchange for Savio.
