Middlesbrough face a trip to Wigan Athletic in their second match of the new season on Wednesday. With both the teams looking to bounce back from defeats on the opening day of the campaign, the game promises to be a treat for the fans.

A poor second half performance from Middlesbrough in the second half was capitalized by Blackburn Rovers and the away team came out with three points to kick start their season. Middlesbrough took the lead in the 31st minute through Stewart Downing and looked comfortable on the ball.

However Middlesbrough's inability to convert any further chances allowed Blackburn to come back into the game, first with an emphatic header from Roque Santa Cruz to level the game and then Matt Derbyshire curling shot from the edge of the penalty box giving the away side the lead with just 10 minutes remaining.

Middlesbrough came close to an equalizer in the closing stages of the match, when Wheater attempt was blocked by Friedel 's legs in the final minute of the game. Boro manager Gareth Southgate admitted that his team is a bit short on morale after the loss, but promised a better performance in the second match.

Meanwhile Wigan were unlucky not to have come away with a point against Everton on the opening day of the campaign. Goals from Leon Osman and Victor Anichebe were enough for Everton to claim three points and though Antoine Sibierkski pulled one back for the visitors, Wigan had to suffer an opening day defeat for the third time in a row.

Wigan manager Chris Hutchings admitted he was unhappy with the way the two goals were let in. However he was in all praises for debutant Jason Koumas, adding that the team will perform better once the new signings gel with each other.
