The Hammers squandered a 1-0 lead to go down 2-1 to Spurs at Upton Park in an early Sunday kickoff. Carlton Cole, guilty of missing two easy first half chances, gave West Ham the lead with a stunning left footed volley shortly after the interval. However Cole undid all his good work with a horrendous back pass minutes later, and Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe did not need a second invitation to blast the ball past Robert Green.

The Upton Park faithful were left stunned when Spurs winger Aaron Lennon scored against the run of play with a left footed effort, and their side left the pitch ruing what could have been. The Hammers reached the third round of the Carling Cup last season, where they were upset by Watford.

Millwall have picked up six points from their first four league games. The Lions’ last game, against Southend United, ended in a stalemate. Manager Kenny Jackett opted for an attacking 4-3-3 formation in the first half, but later switched to the more traditional 4-4-2 after the interval.

Millwall thrashed Bournemouth 4-0 in the first round of the League Cup. Gary Alexander scored the opening goal for the Lions and his strike partner Neil Harris grabbed a hat trick as Millwall eased past the Cherries. Millwall had lost to Northampton Town in the first round of the Cup last season.
