The Hammers had to suffer a narrow 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the semi final of the competition. Both the teams struggled to stamp their authority over the game with Jermaine Defoe’s goal in the 74th minute proving to be vital in the end.

There was some worse news waiting for manager Gianfranco Zola following the game after it was revealed that Luis Boa Morte was out of action for at least four months with a knee injury. The 31-year old was carried off the field after he injured himself with his studs getting stuck into the turf.

They take on a Beijing Guoan side that had come very close to causing an upset in the opening game against Hull City. The Tigers had taken an early lead through Geovanni in the 9th minute but Beijing struck back to equalize through William Paul two minutes into the second half.

The game went all the way into the penalty shootout and though Dean Marney missed his chance for Hull, Beijing were unable to capitalize on that mistake and failed to convert two of their own to allow Hull go through to the final.
