West Bromwich Albion lost their manager Tony Mowbray to Celtic at the beginning of the season, but in Roberto Di Matteo, the Baggies have found a more than capable replacement. The former Chelsea midfielder guided newly promoted Milton Keynes Dons to third place in League One last season.

The likes of Robert Koren, Jonathan Greening and Chris Brunt are still at Hawthorns. West Brom have managed to retain the core of their squad, although they could have done with Paul Robinson's experience in defence. Simon Cox has arrived from Swindon Town for £1.5m, and is expected to start alongside Ishmael Miller.

Newcastle United will be without a manager when they take on West Brom at the Hawthorns on Saturday. The Magpies were relegated last season after sixteen years in the top flight. Caretaker manager Chris Houghton will be in charge this weekend. No notable signings have been made, but Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins has left for Bundesliga champions Hoffenheim. Michael Owen has been snapped up on a free transfer by Manchester United.

Newcastle started their preparations for the new season impressively, beating Shamrock Rovers, Darlington and Huddersfield Town to win three in a row. Then came the ultimate shocker- a 6-1 loss to Leyton Orient. The heavy defeat was followed by draws against Leeds United and Dundee United.
