Udinese knocked out defending champions Zenit St.Petersburg in the round of 16. They won the first leg 2-0, and that two goal cushion allowed them to progress despite a 1-0 loss in the return leg. Defender Frank Baumann returns to the squad after serving a one game suspension. Like Udinese, Werder Bremen have been highly inconsistent in their domestic league. They are currently 10^th in the Bundesliga, 15 points behind leaders Wolfsburg. They beat Hannover 96 4-1 on Sunday, with Claudio Pizarro scoring a hat trick. Brazilian playmaker Diego scored the other goal for the Green-Whites.
