Werder Bremen eliminated Udinese, Italy’s last remaining team in European competition, 6-4 on aggregate in the quarterfinals. They won the first leg 3-1 at the Weserstadion, and were trailing 3-1 in the second leg, but recovered well in the second half to draw 3-3 Star midfielder Diego, a summer target for many top clubs, scored two goals in both legs.

Goalkeeper Tim Wiese was the hero for Werder in their DFB Pokal semifinal. He saved three penalties in the shootout after the match had ended 1-1 at the end of regulation time. In their last Bundesliga game, Werder produced another spectacular second half comeback to beat VFL Bochum 3-2 after trailing 2-0 at half time.

Hamburg were pushed all the way by Manchester City in their quarterfinal but Martin Jol’s men managed to hold their nerve and booked a semifinal spot against their bitter north German rivals. Hamburg won the first leg 3-1, which enabled them to progress despite a 2-1 defeat at Eastlands. Hamburg’s recent indifferent domestic form is the reason why Wolfsburg, and not them, are sitting on top of the Bundesliga. They lost 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund last week- the only UEFA Cup semifinalists to lose in their domestic league.
