Werder finished a disappointing 10^th in the Bundesliga last season. They did however manage to reach the finals of the UEFA Cup and also beat Bayer Leverkusen to win the German Cup. Trainer Thomas Schaaf will be hoping for a better performance from the Green-Whites this season.

Star playmaker Diego has left for Juventus. Defender Frank Baumann has retired, while Marko Marin, Tim Borowski and Marcelo Moreno have arrived at the north German club. Moreno netted a brace in Werder's 5-0 win over Union Berlin in the DFB Pokal last weekend. Central defender Naldo is a doubt with a hamstring injury picked up in training.

Eintracht Frankfurt finished three places below Werder Bremen in the 2008-09 Bundesliga season. Michael Skibbe's men ended with 33 points from their 34 games. Junichi Inamoto, Kreso Ljubicic and Michael Fink have left the club. Pirmin Schwegler has been acquired from Leverkusen for €500,000, while Selim Teber has come on a free transfer from champions Hoffenheim. Goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann has also been snapped up on a free from Schalke 04.

Frankfurt beat Kickers Offenbach 3-0 in the German Cup last week. All three goals came in the last twenty minutes of the game. Pirmin Schwegler opened the scoring on 71 minutes, and further strikes from midfielders Caio and Alexander Meier sealed victory for Eintracht.
