Two teams who scored three goals each on Matchday 1 will meet at the Weserstadion on Thursday as Werder Bremen host Spanish club Athletic Bilbao in a Group L Europa League game. Werder needed a late goal from Claudio Pizarro to beat Nacional in Madeira in their group opener. A penalty from Torsten Frings and Pizarro’s 55^th minute strike seemed to have put them on course for three points, but Nacional hit back through Felipe Lopes and Halliche. Pizarro however had the last say, grabbing an 85^th minute winner to give Werder all three points.

Pizarro also netted a brace in Werder’s 3-0 weekend win over Mainz. Aaron Hunt opened the scoring for the Green Whites before Pizarro’s second half double killed off the game.

Athletic Bilbao strolled to a 3-0 victory over Austria Vienna on matchday 1. Teenage wonderkid Iker Munain earned a penalty and then scored a goal himself as Joaquin Caparros’ side swept aside Vienna at home.

Munain was brought down in the area as early as the ninth minute, and striker Fernando Llorente duly dispatched the resulting penalty. Fourteen minutes later, Llorente converted Markel Susaeta’s cross to make it 2-0 to the home side. There was a third to come, and Llorente unselfishly squared the ball for Munain to complete the simplest of tap-ins.

However Athletic Bilbao have lost their last two games in the league, and were crushed 4-0 by Sevilla on Saturday. Werder are fifth in the Bundesliga going into this game, while Athletic are sixth in La Liga. Who will win this clash at the Weserstadion?
