Alan Curbishley has gone, and fans and pundits are now expecting a more attacking style of play from West Ham. Gianfranco Zola, in his playing years at Chelsea, was after all known for his attacking skills. Dean Ashton’s ankle injury sees him miss this game. West Ham booked their spot in the third round by beating Macclesfield Town 4-1. Three of those four goals came in extra time though. The Hammers reached the last eight of the League Cup last time round before losing to Everton. They have lost both their away games in the league, firstly to Manchester City and then to West Brom.

Watford have had some decent results in the Championship. They managed to beat both Charlton and Ipswich, but inconsistency sees them currently languishing in mid table. Before the League Cup game, they play Reading, who beat Sheffield Wednesday 6-0 recently. Watford lost by two goals when they met Wednesday. The Hornets progressed to the third round by beating Bristol Rovers and Darlington in the first and second round respectively. Last season, Watford lost in the second round to Southend United. Polish forward Grzegorz Rasiak is out with a shoulder injury, and left back Mat Sadler’s knee injury rules him out too. Tamas Priskin is also a doubt, after suffering a hamstring injury in the loss to Plymouth.
