Boro are three points away from safety and need to win their final game against West Ham and hope that both Newcastle United and Hull City lose. However with Hull having a superior goal difference compared to Boro, the Tigers will have to lose heavily or Middlesbrough will have to register one of their biggest wins this season if they are to jump out of the drop zone at the last moment.

But with Manchester United expected to field a weakened line up and with Newcastle certain to collect at least a point against Aston Villa, it is looking as if Middlesbrough will be playing Championship football next season.

Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson has reassured Gareth Southgate that his job is safe even if Boro get relegated but the former England international is certain to lose a number of his key players including Sanli Tuncay and David Wheater while Stewart Downing will be missing the start of the new season with injury.

Meanwhile West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola will be hoping to end the season with a comfortable victory. Two defeats in their last two matches ended any hopes of European action next season but Zola will be happy with his side's performance this season with West Ham certain to end up in the top half of the table for a second consecutive season.
