Manager John Toshack decided to omit the Manchester City striker and instead has picked up a young squad with an eye on the future as he prepares for a tough Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.

The 30-year old has featured in just two of Wales’ last eight games due to injuries and while he is still regarded as a key player for his country, Toshack could be forced to use him only during competitive matches.

Reading’s Simon Church has been called up to the squad and is expected to partner Ched Evans up front while Simon Davies has also been recalled to the national squad.

Sweden coach Erik Hamren has also opted for youth with Rasmus Elm, Pontus Wernbloom, Marcus Berg and Ola Toivonen all being picked for the squad after impressing in the U21 European Championships last summer.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has not been picked in the 18-man squad with the Barcelona striker yet to decide on his international fixture.
