Fresh from victory in the “clasico” against Real Madrid, Barcelona travel to Villarreal this coming Sunday and will seek to continue their relentless pursuit of reclaiming the Spanish La Liga title. Barca secured a hard-fought victory in the Spanish “super derby” against fierce rivals Real Madrid. The 2-0 score line doesn’t accurately depict the turn of events at the Nou Camp last Saturday evening. Real fought tooth and nail in a bid to halt the depressing run of defeats they’ve been suffering lately, and put on a very respectable performance. Although it was back to the wall stuff for much of the game, they held off Barcelona (who also had a penalty saved) until the 83^rd minute when Eto’o popped up with a vital goal. The victory wasn’t sealed until the 91^st minute when wonder-kid Lionel Messi scored the decisive second.

Barcelona are now unbeaten in fourteen La Liga matches, a run that stretches back to the first game of the season when they crashed to a defeat by Numancia. They are eight points clear of second placed Valencia and it now appears that barring a collapse of biblical proportions, Barca are well on their way to being crowned this year’s champions.

Long term injury victim, Midfielder Andres Iniesta, could make a welcome return in the weekend game against Villarreal, this after being side-lined for almost six weeks with a thigh problem. Apart from this, the team are at full strength and with all their “superstars” now appearing to be firing on all cylinders it would take a brave man to predict anything other than a victory for the Catalans on Sunday.

Last weekend Villarreal were up against fellow high flyers Sevilla in Seville, but unfortunately for them they lost the game 1-0 and with it a bit of the momentum they had gathered on their assault of a Champions League spot. Their home form this season, nevertheless, has been good, with four wins, two draws and only one loss, which will give them heart for the visit of Barcelona.
