Zenit St. Petersburg go into their next live UEFA Cup match with a goal to their credit after they beat Villarreal 1-0 in their encounter at the Petrovsky Stadium in St Petersburg.

Pavel Pogrebnyak was the lone goal scorer in a tough encounter that saw both sides play some competitive football. However it was an error from Villarreal keeper Diego Lopez that saw the Russian Champions take a deserving lead. The goal was also the 100th goal scored by Zenit in all European club competitions.

Although Zenit had plenty of chances thereafter they were unable to get a vital second goal and had to be satisfied with a 1-0 win. Zenit coach Dick Advocaat would have been delighted to see his team unbeaten in 22 European games, but will be aware his side have plenty of work to do if they are to progress to the round of 16.

Meanwhile Villarreal slipped to their first defeat away from home in live UEFA Cup action last week against Zenit. Coach Manuel Pellegrini will be disappointed with their performance, but will hope his side can improve in the second leg due to be held this Thursday at the El Madrigal Stadium in Villarreal.

Villarreal could also have Angel Lopez back from a knee injury for the second leg and it will be a boost to their chances should he make it to the squad. The Spanish side are out of Copa del Rey and do not have a realistic chance of finishing in the top four in domestic La Liga competition and thus the UEFA Cup represents their only chance of staying in Europe next season.
