Venezuela, the only team in the CONMEBOL region never to have appeared in the World Cup, need a victory this weekend when they host already qualified Paraguay in the eastern city of Puerto Ordaz. Venezuela are seventh in the group with 21 points to their name, but having Paraguay and Brazil to play in the final two rounds may prove to be a blessing in disguise as both the teams are already assured of qualification. La Vinotinto rode on the back of a brace from striker Nicolas Fedor to beat Peru 3-1 in their last qualifier. Club Brugge midfielder Ronald Vargas scored Venezuela’s third goal of the game, while defender Juan Fuenmayor scored an own goal.

Paraguay booked their spot at the World Cup with a shock 1-0 win over Argentina in the previous round. Borussia Dortmund striker Nelson Haedo Valdez scored the only goal of the game on 27 minutes to give the Guaranies their ninth win in qualifying. Argentina also ended the game with ten men after Juan Sebastian Veron received his marching orders early in the second half.

Coach Gerardo Martino has called up Argentine born midfielder Nestor Ortigoza to the national squad for the first time. Man City forward Roque Santa Cruz again misses out with a knee injury, but in Salvador Cabanas, Haedo Valdez and Oscar Cardozo, they have strikers who can terrorise opposition defences. Valdez and Cabanas have together scored 10 goals in qualifying.
