Barcelona will be looking to extend their five point lead at the top of the La Liga table and put more pressure on Real Madrid with a comfortable victory over Valladolid when the two teams meet on Saturday. The Catalan giants shrugged off their Copa del Rey defeat to Sevilla by thrashing the Andalusian club 4-0 in their league encounter last weekend. Barcelona finally broke through the Sevilla defense early in the second half thanks to an own goal by Julien Escude before Pedro doubled the lead in the 70th minute. Lionel Messi then wrapped up the points by scoring two goals in the final five minutes to secure a comfortable victory for the defending champions.

The victory, coupled with Real Madrid’s shock defeat to Athletic Bilbao, saw Barca extend their lead to five points with half of the season gone. Coach Josep Guardiola will be pleased with his side’s performances so far and will be optimistic that his side will not return the favor to Madrid by dropping points at Valladolid.

There is speculation over Josep Guardiola’s future as he is yet to sign a contract extension, but Barca President LaPorta has expressed confidence that the manager will sign soon.

Meanwhile Jose Mendilibar’s side are struggling for form and find themselves just one point above the drop zone. The Pucela have won just one of their last 10 games and Mendilibar will be aware that his side will have to improve sooner rather than later if they are to avoid getting sucked into a relegation dogfight in the second half of the season.
