Defending champions Olympique Lyon will settle for nothing less than a win when they travel to Valenciennes this weekend. Les Gones’ chances of retaining their Ligue crown were dealt a huge blow after they failed to beat PSG last weekend, and Claude Puel’s men are now six points behind leaders Marseille. Lyon were clearly the more dominant side in their game against PSG, but they failed to score as the match ended 0-0. Lyon boss Claude Puel thought that his side had deserved all three points for their efforts, and were unlucky to come out of it with only a single point.

Midfield playmaker Juninho is a doubt for the trip to Valenciennes as he has a knee problem. With tough games against Nantes and Marseille ahead, Lyon will also have to ensure that they do not drop out of the Champions League race. PSG are just a point behind, and are ready to take advantage of a Lyon slipup.

Valenciennes are five points above the drop zone, having collected 37 points from 33 games this season. Their safety is not yet guaranteed, with the likes of Bordeaux , Monaco and PSG up next after Lyon.

Valenciennes drew 1-1 against Sochaux last week. Amara Karba Bangoura gave Valenciennes the lead in the second half after Sochaux keeper Teddy Richert had been sent off. Just as the game looked as if it had been won, Mody Traore handled the ball in the fourth minute of extra time, and Vaclav Sverkos converted the resulting spot kick for Sochaux.
