Los Che drew their group opener against Lille in France. Substitute Juan Mata put Valencia ahead on 78 minutes, making an immediate impact after replacing Jordi Alba. Croatian striker Nikola Zigic headed the ball to Joaquin, who produced a little run of his own before passing to Mata. Lille No.15 Emerson failed to intercept the ball, and Mata fired one left footed past opposition keeper Ludovic Butelle.

Genoa suffered their second league defeat of the season as they went down 2-0 in Udine. Udinese forwards Antonio Di Natale and Simone Pepe struck late in the game to give the home side all three points. After their impressive start to the season, Genoa have now picked up only one point from their last three games.

Genoa currently lead Group B after beating Slavia Prague a fortnight ago. The Rossoblu took the lead through Alberto Zapater in the fourth minute, and doubled it through Giuseppe Sculli a few minutes before half time.
