The defending champions were thrashed 6-2 in a brilliant attacking display by Barcelona and the winning margin could have been bigger were it not for a string of excellent saves by Iker Casillas. Valencia will be hoping to avoid a third straight home defeat to Real Madrid with the Los Merengues winning on their last two visits to the Mestalla. Just one point from their last two matches has seen Valencia once again slip into the danger of missing out Champions League action next season with Atletico Madrid closing down the gap to the fourth place to just one point.

Unai Emery's side go into the match against Madrid on the back of a disappointing defeat away to Espanyol who put up an improved performance in the second half to cruise to a comfortable 3-0 win in the end.
