Uruguay gave their own chances of qualifying a big boost by beating Ecuador in Quito on Saturday. Antonio Valencia opened the scoring for Uruguay on 67 minutes, but Ajax Amsterdam skipper Luis Suarez replied almost instantly for the visitors. A late foul by Ecuadorean keeper Elizaga on Palermo forward Edinson Cavani saw the referee point to the spot, and Diego Forlan stepped up to score the winner in the fourth minute of injury time.

A win for Uruguay will see them book an automatic spot at next year’s finals. A draw will also do if Ecuador lose or draw against Chile in their final qualifier. There is one automatic qualifying spot and one playoff spot up for grabs.

Argentina needed a late goal from veteran striker Martin Palermo to beat Peru 2-1 at home on Saturday. Coach Diego Maradona made seven changes to the squad that lost to Paraguay, and chose to keep Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero on the bench. Three players were given their first ever senior caps.

Gonzalo Higuain, making his debut for the Albicelestes, put them ahead on 48 minutes after latching on to Pablo Aimar’s pass. Substitute Rengifo headed in an equaliser for Peru towards the end, and just as Argentina’s dreams were melting away, Palermo struck the winner in the third minute of extra time to give his side three crucial points.
