Surprise starter Conor Casey scored twice as the Americans emerged 3-2 winners and qualified for their sixth straight World Cup. After a goalless first half, Julio Cesar de Leon put Honduras ahead, but the USA responded magnificently with three strikes in eighteen minutes. Casey netted the first two, while Landon Donovan scored the third. De Leon again pulled one back for Honduras, and the home side could have even come out with a draw had Carlos Pavon not missed his 87th minute spot kick. Walter Centeno scored in the 50th minute to make it 2-0, and on loan Bristol City strike Alvaro Saborio then netted twice in the space of three minutes to give the home side a comfortable win. Should Costa Rica beat the US, they will take the last remaining automatic qualifying spot. A draw will also do, if Honduras fail to beat El Salvador.
