Tranmere slumped to their third defeat in four League One games as they were convincingly beaten 3-0 by Leeds United on Saturday. Bradley Johnson, Jermaine Beckford and Luciano Becchio scored for the hosts, who could easily have won by more than three goals.

Tranmere beat Grimsby Town 4-0 to reach this stage of the Carling Cup. Paul McLaren opened the scoring for Rovers on 32 minutes, and that opened the floodgates as two other goals went in before half time. One was a penalty converted by Ian Thomas-Moore, while the other was volleyed home by Craig Curran. Gareth Edds completed the rout when he headed in a 71^st minute corner.

Bolton were guilty of squandering easy chances as they were beaten 1-0 by Hull City in their weekend Premier League games. The Trotters had many opportunities to put the game beyond Hull's reach, but instead ended up taking nothing from their visit to Humberside. Kevin Davies, Matt Taylor, Johan Elmander and Sam Ricketts all went close for Gary Megson's side.

Bolton were eliminated by another League One side- Northampton Town, in the second round of the Carling Cup last season. The Trotters had Gary Cahill sent off as Town upset Gary Megson's side 2-1 at the Reebok.
