The inaugural winners of the UEFA Cup meet the Polish champions as Tottenham Hotspur take on Wisla Krakow at White Hart Lane in a European fixture on Thursday. While Spurs have had an indifferent start to the season, they do have talent aplenty, and you can watch Jenas, Modric, Lennon, King, Dawson and co. in action by signing up for as little as £9.99 a year. Russian striker Roman Pavyluchenko, a £13.8 million summer acquisition from Spartak Moscow, will not take part in this game as he is cup tied. Spurs have seen an exodus of strikers from White Hart Lane in the last twelve months- Mido, Robbie Keane, Dimitar Berbatov and Jermain Defoe have all left the club. Juande Ramos is well acquainted with the nature of the UEFA Cup, having guided Sevilla to glory in his first season with the Spanish club. Spurs started their Premiership campaign with defeats to Middlesbrough and Sunderland, but picked up a point in the London derby against Chelsea. They qualified for the UEFA Cup by winning the League Cup last season.
Wisla Krakow won the 2007-08 Polish Ekstraklasa quite comfortably, finishing fourteen points ahead of Legia Warsaw. That saw them qualify for the second round of Champions League qualifying, where they beat Beitar Jerusalem 6-1 over two legs to book a meeting against Spanish giants Barcelona. To their credit, they did beat Barcelona at home, but their 4-0 loss at the Nou Camp ensured that their campaign came to an end there. Wisla are currently fifth in the Ekstraklasa with 10 points from four games, but they do have a game in hand. Pawel Brozek was the Ekstraklasa’s top scorer last season with 23 goals, and he will spearhead Wisla’s attack. Can Spurs start their live UEFA Cup campaign on a winning note?
