Tottenham Hotspur meet Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk for the second leg of their UEFA Cup round of 32 tie this Thursday at White Hart Lane. The task before Spurs is tough but not impossible- they have to overcome a 2-0 deficit from the first leg. Spurs fielded a weakened side in Ukraine with Harry Redknapp keeping one eye on his congested schedule. They held on for nearly eighty minutes before goals from Yevhen Seleznyov and Jadson put Shakhtar in the driver’s seat for the return leg.

With the all important league Cup final against Manchester United coming up, Harry Redknapp is likely to give more of his youngsters a chance to shine on the big stage. He gave 17 year old Dean Parrett a debut in Ukraine, and has already said that he will give three or four more youngsters a chance to impress.

 

 

Shakhtar played extremely well in the UEFA Cup home leg, and deserved their victory when you look at the number of opportunities they created. They had a total of nineteen shots on goal in comparison to Spurs’ six. It was Mircea Lucescu’s first win over an English club in ten attempts. Defender Tomas Hubschman returns after missing the first leg due to suspension. Unlike his opposite number who has had to rest key players, Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu has no such issues. The likes of Darijo Srna, Razvan Rat and Jadson will feature as Shakhtar aim to dump Spurs out of the cup.
