The Magpies earned a vital point last weekend when Andy Carroll headed home a late equalizer nine minutes from time to help his side avoid defeat against Stoke City. The result, coupled with Sunderland's defeat to Manchester United, meant that Newcastle closed down the gap towards safety to just two points.

Newcastle coach Chris Hughton admitted that his side faces a very tough task of lifting themselves out of the relegation zone and with the Magpies scheduled to play Liverpool, Aston Villa and Fulham in their remaining six matches, they will have to win their remaining three home games and hope to snatch a point or two on their travels if they are to have any hopes of avoiding the relegation. The good news is that striker Mark Viduka could be back in the team after recovering from a long-standing Achilles problem. He is expected to partner Michael Owen or Obafemi Martins upfront.

Tottenham on the other hand bounced back to winning ways against West Ham United last weekend to put their European challenge back on track. The win saw Spurs lift themselves up to ninth in the league table, just three points behind seventh placed West Ham. Spurs won 1-0 thanks to a goal from the much-maligned Roman Pavlyuchenko.

Manager Harry Redknapp has revealed that the Russian’s language skills leave much to be desired, but if he continues to score vital goals, Redknapp will have no complaints. The former Pompey manager will welcome Wilson Palacios back after the latter served a one-match ban last week.
