Tottenham manager Juande Ramos had asked his players to go and have a blast after they won the Carling Cup, but he would not have anticipated that the results would also turn out to be mixed. Spurs are out of the UEFA Cup and have stuttered in the Premiership as well.

The Spurs have won just one of their last five Premier League games and will need to pull up their socks if they are to finish in the top 10. In their last game, they were held to a 1-1 draw at Blackburn with Dimitar Berbatov scoring for Spurs, while Morten Gamst Pedersen cancelled it out for the Rovers. The draw means Tottenham are still 11th with 40 points from 33 games.

Middlesbrough meanwhile acquitted themselves fairly well in their last game against Manchester United. New signing Afonso Alves scored a brace, while United needed all their wits about them to cancel out these goals. Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney once again came good for the visitors.

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has some injury worries ahead of this match with Robert Huth out with a foot injury, while Mido has a hernia issue. But Fabio Rochemback is back from suspension.

Boro are placed 14th with 35 points from 33 games and are mathematically safe from relegation. Last season, Tottenham clinched this fixture 2-3, while the reverse fixture ended in a 1-1 draw earlier this season.
