Ask any Spurs fan and he/she would struggle to recall the bleak days under former boss Martin Jol. For the arrival of Juande Ramos from Sevilla has transformed the atmosphere at White Hart Lane so much so that Tottenham could end up winning two big trophies this season.
Tottenham: Path to Wembley Tottenham began their live League Cup campaign with a convincing 2-0 win over Middlesbrough. Gareth Bale and Tom Huddlestone were the goal scorers for Spurs and the win was estimated to relieve the pressure from the then-boss Martin Jol.
In the fourth round Tottenham beat Blackpool by an identical 2-0 margin with Robbie Keane and Pascal Chimbonda scoring the goals. That game was also Juande Ramos' first game in charge of Spurs and it probably sent signals that the Spaniard meant business.
Next up were Manchester City in the quarterfinals and cool strikes by Jermain Defoe and Steed Malbranque sent Spurs through to a repeat semi-final match up against Arsenal. Tottenham triumphed even though they had Didier Zokora sent off early on.
The semi-final proved to be an anti-climax with Tottenham winning with an aggregate score of 6-2. The first encounter was tied 1-1, but Spurs humbled Arsenal 5-1 in the second leg with Jermaine Jenas, Robbie Keane, Aaron Lennon and Steed Malbranque scoring for Spurs. However the game will be remembered for the ugly on-pitch confrontation between Nicklas Bendtner and Emmanuel Adebayor. ![]() Tottenham have proved they are no pushovers and under Juande Ramos they look a transformed team. It will be interesting to see how they cope with Chelsea’s tight defense.
Chelsea have proved they have a strong bench as they qualified for the finals despite missing key players like skipper John Terry and striker Didier Drogba at crucial stages of their live Carling Cup campaign. Manager Avram Grant will be hoping to lay his hands on the first trophy of his reign at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea: Path to Wembley Carling Cup holders Chelsea began their League Cup live campaign on a high note way back in September 2007 by trouncing Hull 0-4 away from home. While that game was a stroll in the Park for the Blues, the fourth round against Leicester City was a tough proposition.
Frank Lampard was the hero of that game rescuing his side with a hat-trick after Gareth McAuley, DJ Campbell and Carl Cort had scored for the Foxes. Chelsea misfit Andriy Shevchenko also grabbed a goal as Chelsea entered the quarterfinals of the Carling Cup with an unconvincing 4-3 win.
That set up a potentially blockbuster quarterfinal clash with arch rivals Liverpool. However the game was a damp squib as the Blues ran away with the game 2-0 thanks to Lampard and Andriy Shevchenko's goals. The ill-tempered clash saw Peter Crouch red-carded as well. ![]() Chelsea met Everton in the semi-finals and over two attempts triumphed with an overall score of 3-1. In the first encounter at Stamford Bridge Everton defender Joleon Lescott put the ball into his own goal to give Chelsea a 2-1 win after Yakubu had canceled out a Shaun Wright-Phillips goal.
Chelsea are still active on all four fronts and would like to believe the Carling Cup would be the first of may trophies to adorn the cabinet at Stamford Bridge this season.
