The Gunners finished fourth in the Premier League last season, although they were in real danger of finishing outside the Champions League spots at one point of time. Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor has left for Man City, while Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen has arrived from Ajax. Goalkeeper Lukas Fabianski and midfielder Samir Nasri will both remain in England as they are injured.

Arsenal drew 2-2 with Barnet in their first friendly of the season. Tomas Rosicky captained the side in his comeback match, but Arsenal could not force a win at Underhill. Andrei Arshavin and Nacer Barazite netted for the Gunners. In their next friendly, Nicklas Bendtner, Aaron Ramsey and Robin Van Persie all scored braces as Arsene Wenger's men whipped SC Columbia 7-1.

Szombathelyi Haladas finished third in Hungary last season, and also managed to qualify for the Europa League. They beat Kazakh side Irtysh Pavlodar in the first qualifying round, but were beaten by Swedish side Elfsborg in the next round. Szombathelyi lost the two legged tie 3-0 on aggregate.

Haladas also hosted Arsenal in a pre-season friendly last season. Teenage star Carlos Vela made his Arsenal debut as the Gunners drew 1-1 in Hungary. Krisztian Kenesei gave Haladas an early lead, but Theo Walcott equalised for the Gunners just before half time. We could see Croatian striker Eduardo back in action for the Gunners against Haladas.
