The Swiss are tied on points with Greece after six games in Group 2, but trail Otto Rehhagel’s side on goal difference. Their last game was a friendly against world champions Italy, which ended in a 0-0 draw. Goalkeeper Diego Benaglio was the hero for the Swiss as they extended their unbeaten run to seven games.

Switzerland manager Ottmar Hitzfeld has rung in the changes, giving Triestina defender Alain Nef a surprising call up to the national squad. Lazio’s Stephen Lichsteiner is suspended, while Arsenal defender Johan Djorou is injured. Liverpool’s Philipp Degen has been left out of the squad after an ordinary performance against the Italians, and we could see a surprise start for Hertha’s Steve von Bergen.

Euro 2004 champions Greece have picked up thirteen points from six games in Group 2. Their last international game was a friendly against Poland, which Otto Rehhagel’s men lost 2-0. Giorgos Fotakis has been called up to the national squad as cover for Giorgios Karagounis, for whom the Swiss game will come too soon.

Rehhagel will be hoping that Angelos Charisteas and Theofanis Gekas, who have together scored eight goals in qualification, will fire in Basel. Olympiakos Piraeus defender Vassilis Torosidis misses out due to injury.

Greece’s only defeat in qualification came against the Swiss in October last year, when goals from Alexander Frei and Blaise N’Kufo gave Schweizer Nati a 2-1 win in Piraeus.
