Sweden lost their last game by a 1-0 margin to their Nordic neighbors Denmark thanks to a goal from Thomas Kahlenberg. The side's misery was complete after Kim Kallstrom missed a penalty awarded in the 12th minute. His weak effort was saved by Thomas Sorensen and Denmark took full advantage 10 minutes later.

The loss leaves Sweden on the fourth spot in Group 1 with six points from five games. In a group that also includes Portugal and Hungary, Sweden look to be down and out of the race to reach the South Africa World Cup finals.

Sweden coach Lars Lagerback's position is now in doubt and he will hope his side can reward their fans with a win in this one.

Meanwhile Malta are bottom of Group 1 of the European round of World Cup qualifiers with just one point from seven games played so far. They will hope to put up a good show against Sweden at home and showcase their skills in front of home fans.

Malta have called up Australian midfielder John Hutchinson to feature in the team for this game. The Maltese Football Association is keen to recruit players with Maltese heritage as they look to consolidate their football base.
