After seeing their hopes of making it to the 2010 World Cup dented by neighbours Denmark, Sweden will hope that luck favours them when they meet Albania at the Rasunda Stadium on Wednesday evening. Jakob Poulsen’s 79^th minute effort was enough for Denmark to beat Sweden in a keenly contested game at the Parken stadium. The Aarhus midfielder fired one past Swedish keeper Andreas Isaksson from twenty yards out after being set up by Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner. The win allowed Denmark to qualify, but left Sweden’s hopes hanging by a thread after Portugal beat Hungary 3-0.

Sweden need to beat Albania and hope that Malta, who have not yet scored a goal in qualifying, avoid defeat against Portugal. Portugal have 16 points from nine games, while Sweden have 15 from the same number of fixtures.

Albania are already out of contention for a World Cup spot. Josip Kuze’s side have picked up seven points from nine games. Their solitary win came at home against Malta, but they have also managed to hold Portugal, Sweden and Denmark to draws.

Albania’s last qualifier was against the Danes in Tirane. Nicklas Bendtner put Denmark ahead just before half time, but Albania drew level in the 54^th minute through veteran striker Erjon Bogdani. Albania do have some good players in their ranks- Sunderland skipper Lorik Cana represents them at international level, and so does Cottbus medio Ervin Skela.
