Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Petter Hansson were the heroes for Sweden with the Inter Milan striker scoring a screamer of a goal in the second half to set things off. This was the former's first goal for Sweden since October 2005.

The win was sealed for Lars Lagerback's side by Hansson who was on hand when Nikopolidis parried a ball from Ljungberg. The defending champions were humbled in their first game and face a tough task if they are to qualify for the next stage.

However Sweden's sweet success was spoiled by news that midfielder Christian Wilhelmsson had injured his thigh and will not feature in the remaining group stage games.

Meanwhile Spain showed everybody why they are the pundits' favorites with a massive 4-1 win over Russia. David Villa lived up to this status as a fearsome striker scoring a hat-trick, which was the first in the Euro finals since eight years when Patrick Kluivert of Netherlands had slotted in three against Yugoslavia.

Cesc Fabregas got the fourth goal for Spain deep in injury time, while Roman Pavlyuchenko grabbed a consolation for Russia. Spain's fearsome twosome Fernando Torres and David Villa must surely be sending shivers down opponents' spines just one game into the Euro 2008.
