McCarthy was part of the Sunderland team that put up one of the worst showings in the history of the Premier League as the Black Cats were relegated to the Championship after collecting then a record low of just 15 points. While Derby County managed to put up a far worse showing two seasons ago, McCarthy will be keen to prove that he is not a failure at the top flight and will be looking to help his side maintain a respectable distance from the relegation zone.

Wolves registered only their second win of the season last weekend as they secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Fulham at the Molineux Stadium with Kevin Doyle and David Edwards hitting the back of the net.

Sunderland on the other hand have struggled for consistency at the start of the new season though the Black Cats are off to a decent start with nine points from their first six games. With Sunderland scheduled to play Manchester United and Liverpool in their next two matches, manager Steve Bruce will be expecting nothing less that all three points on Sunday as he attempts to help his club finish as near to the top half of the league table as possible.

The Black Cats suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat away to Burnley last weekend though they managed to bounce back with a 2-0 win over Birmingham City in their Carling Cup match in the midweek.
