The Black Cats finally emerged from a dismal run that had seen them hovering just above the relegation zone with a 1-2 win over Blackburn. Christopher Samba had headed the Rovers in front from Morten Gamst Pedersen's corner leading to visions of another loss for manager Roy Keane.

However the second half was totally different for Sunderland as Djibril Cisse leveled from a Steed Malbranque pass and Trinidad and Tobago striker Kenwyne Jones slotted home the winner. The win took Sunderland to the 11 spot on the league table with 15 points, but Keane will be aware that just two points separate the teams in the bottom half of the table.

 

 

Meanwhile West Ham are facing tough times both on and off the field. There is uncertainty over the ownership of the club, while on the pitch they have floundered after a fine start under Gianfranco Zola.

In the last game, the Hammers managed their first clean sheet of the season and halted their losing streak with a 0-0 draw against Portsmouth. Craig Bellamy had a chance to seal the game with a second half free kick, but his shot hit the bar and the chance went a begging.

 

 

The Hammers are currently 14th on the Premier League table with 14 points from 13 games. Rumors that Zola will need to sell players in January have been refuted by the club, but it is doubtful if he can indeed bring in new ones in the transfer window. Last season this fixture was clinched by the Black Cats 2-1.
