Sunderland are undergoing a transitional phase under Roy Keane. Last year, they were sent out of the League Cup in the second round by Luton Town, but this season, they clawed their way back from one goal down to beat Nottingham Forest in extra time. The goals were scored by Philip Bardsley and David Healy, with the goal being the latter’s first for the Black Cats. We could see Michael Chopra start in this game- his three game suspension has ended, and he put in a decent performance for the reserves. Northampton Town have not had the greatest start to their League One campaign, but the upset win over the Trotters still remains their brightest moment this season. Adebayo Akinfewa was the hero for the Cobblers that day as they brought Bolton crashing down to earth. In the first round, Northampton had beaten Millwall 1-0, with Jason Crowe scoring. Last year, they beat Millwall 2-0 in the first round, before losing to Middlesbrough by the same scoreline in the second.

 

 

This is the first meeting between Sunderland and Northampton in over twenty years. They last played each other in the 1987/88 Third Division, when Sunderland won 3-0 at home and 2-1 away. This should be an easy one for Sunderland, but they will treat Northampton with a little more respect, given that they dumped a Premiership side in the last round.
