The Black Cats have not won since their shock victory over Arsenal back in November and find themselves outside the top half of the league table in spite of a good start to the season. Manager Steve Bruce will be aware that his side has missed a great chance to pose a strong European challenge this season but will be hoping for a better second half of the season that could see the club finish in their highest position in the league for more than 50 years.

Sunderland were held to a disappointing 2-2 draw away to Blackburn Rovers in their last league match. The Black Cats had twice taken the lead through Darren Bent in the second half but Blackburn equalized both times including a El-Hadji Diouf goal with just 13 minutes remaining on the clock.

Meanwhile Bolton Wanderers fans will be hopeful that a new manager will be appointed in time for the game against Sunderland this weekend. Media reports suggest that Bolton are on the verge of naming Burnley coach Owen Coyle as the successor to Gary Megson though both the clubs are yet to agree to a compensation package.

Bolton’s first game without Megson ended in a comfortable 4-0 win over Lincoln City in their FA Cup tie last weekend. Chris Evans was expected to remain in charge of the club for their tough game away to Arsenal in the midweek but the match was called off due to bad weather.
