The Black Cats had lost 2-1 at the Stadium of Light before suffering a 3-1 defeat away at Fratton Park last season. Pompey have won the last three meetings between the two sides and though they are sitting at the foot of the table, manager Avram Grant will be confident that his side can come away with a positive result this weekend.

Pompey snapped out of a three match losing streak with a 2-0 win over Burnley last weekend with Hermann Hreidarsson and Aruna Dindane scoring the goals in the second half. The win had lifted Portsmouth off the foot of the table but Wolves’ in over Bolton Wanderers meant that Pompey ended another weekend of action at the foot of the table. However with West Ham and Hull City both losing their games, the gap for safety has been reduced to just five points and Grant will be confident of climbing up the table with a win over Sunderland.

Manager Steve Bruce will be expecting a positive response from his side after another disappointing performance against Fulham last weekend. The Black Cats had should great determination to beat Arsenal 1-0 a fortnight ago but have since then slumped to narrow defeats against Wigan Athletic and Fulham.
