The Black Cats almost snatched a victory against defending champions Manchester United in their last game, twice taking the lead only to succumb to an injury time equalizer. Darren Bent opened the scoring with a brilliant goal in the 7th minute but Dimitar Berbatov equalized six minutes into the second half. Kenwyne Jones looked to have won the match for Sunderland in the 58th minute but an own goal by Anton Ferdinand allowed United to stage another late comeback and secure a point from the game.
Manager Steve Bruce was happy with his side's display against United and will be confident that his side can repeat the performance against Liverpool who go into the match following a disappointing defeat to Chelsea in their last game.
Goals from Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda ended Liverpool's four match winning streak and saw the Reds slip to their third defeat of the season. Liverpool are currently sitting sixth in the league table and with Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur emerging as serious challengers for a top four finish this season, manager Rafa Benitez will be aware that his side will have to be at their consistent best if they are to mount another title challenge this year.
New signing Alberto Aquilani should be available for selection with the Italian midfielder recovering from an ankle injury while Sunderland should welcome Lee Cattermole back to the starting lineup after recovering from a foot injury.
