Strasbourg beat Thionville 3-0 in the previous round of the French Cup. Second half goals from Algerian midfielder Yassine Bezzaz and forwards Nicolas Fauvergue and Magaye Gueye gave Le Racing a comfortable win over their lowly opponents.

Strasbourg have managed to string together some good results at home recently. Since their 1-0 loss to Tours in October, Pascal Janin’s men have won all four games at home, scoring nine goals and conceding just two in the process. However for a team that finished fourth in Ligue 2 last season, their league position makes for embarrassing reading- they are currently third from bottom.

Lyon had a miserable December, winning just one of their five league games. That statistic, coupled with a winless November, has seen OL drop down to sixth in the table, thirteen points behind leaders and defending champions Bordeaux.

OL’s last game was at home against Montpellier, which they lost 2-1. Montpellier took the lead in the 53^rd minute through Victor Hugo Montano’s curling shot from just outside the area. Lyon equalized seven minutes from time through Bafetimbi Gomis, who directed Aly Cissokho’s cross past Montpellier keeper Geoffrey Jourden. However OL’s joy was short lived as Montpellier regained the the lead three minutes later. Alberto Costa floated a wonderful ball into the box, and the unmarked Joris Marveaux stepped in to convert from close range. The result left Lyon fans crestfallen and Les Gones boss Claude Puel was seen fuming on the sidelines.
