Stoke crashed to a 5-0 defeat at the hands of a Manchester United side that did not have Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand in the line-up. Cristiano Ronaldo's 100th Manchester United goal started the rout. He then set up Michael Carrick for another before Dimitar Berbatov slotted in his side's third.

Danny Welbeck made his Premier League debut memorable by scoring his side's fourth, while Ronaldo rounded off a fine game for the defending champions.

 

 

Stoke City manager Tony Pulis now needs to motivate his side to battle it out against their fellow promotion winners.

West Bromwich Albion were mauled 3-0 by Chelsea in their previous game with Nicolas Anelka scoring a brace and Jose Bosingwa grabbing a goal. The Baggies were competitive in the game until Bosingwa scored. After that there was no way back into the match for them. West Brom boss Tony Mowbray, who had sounded belligerent before the game began, was philosophical about the loss.

 

 

He will now look forward to putting one over Stoke, but will be without midfielder James Morrison, who has damaged a medial knee ligament. It is expected that Morrison will be out for at least six weeks. Dean Kiely, who sprained a wrist while training for Ireland, may be back for this game.
