The Potters are now unbeaten in their last three games, having beaten Arsenal and Sunderland prior to their game with the Latics. In round three, Stoke survived a tense penalty shootout to beat Reading 4-3 after the game had ended 2-2 in normal time. Mamady Sidibe and Vincent Pericard scored for Stoke in that fixture. Andrew Davies and Liam Lawrence miss this game with knee and ankle injuries respectively.

Rotherham have been poor in the league, but Mark Robins' side have claimed an impressive list of scalps in cup competitions this season- Leeds, Southampton, Sheffield Wednesday, Wolves and most recently Leicester City, whom they beat 2-0 to reach the northern area semifinals of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. In their FA Cup first round tie against Aldershot, they took the lead through Micky Cummins, but were forced to settle for a draw after John Grant slotted home a late penalty for the Shots. Rotherham beat Southampton 3-1 in the third round, with Nick Fenton, Danny Harrison and Drewe Broughton scoring.
