Stoke City bowed out of the Carling Cup in the first round last season, losing to Rochdale on penalties after scores were tied at 2-2 at the end of extra time. This season, Stoke’s second string side saw off Cheltenham Town 3-2 in the second round. They have managed to win only once in the Premiership this season- against Aston Villa. Tony Pullis’ men travel to Anfield for their weekend fixture, a match where they are clear underdogs given Liverpool’s recent good run. Stoke certainly seem to be able to score- they have scored five goals in two Premiership home games so far. However their defence has been leaky, which is the reason they have been unable to take full points from their fixtures. Holding midfielder Amdy Faye is suspended- his three match ban ends after this game.
Reading recently demolished Sheffield Wednesday 6-0 at home, but the Royals have not quite managed to reproduce the same form away from the Madjeski. Steve Coppell’s men won 2-1 against Dagenham and Redbridge in the first round of the Carling Cup, and then crushed Luton 5-1 in the second round. Noel Hunt was on target in both games. Kevin Doyle has scored successive hattricks in Reading’s last two home games, and is expected to spearhead the attack with Hunt. Reading’s campaign in the League Cup last year ended in the third round, when they lost to Liverpool.
This is bound to be a tight game. At stake is a place in the fourth round, and both the teams are expected to go all out to ensure the spot is theirs. Watch live football with us- membership costs only £9.99 for one year.
