Manchester United return from a triumphant campaign in Japan where they became the first team to win the Club World Championship twice, but they will have to overcome their fatigue as they look to close down the gap at the top of the league table. United's participation in the Club World Cup meant that the English champions missed a round of match last weekend but survived the danger of falling further behind league leaders Chelsea and Liverpool as both the teams dropped two points in their matches against Everton and Arsenal.

The defending champions will be high on confidence after claiming their first Club World Cup title last weekend with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Ecuador club LDU Quito. Wayne Rooney scored the only goal of the match though United were reduced to 10 men in the second half after Nemanja Vidic was sent off for elbowing Claudio Bieler.

 

 

With a fairly easy set of fixtures ahead of him in the next month, manager Alex Ferguson will be hoping to string together a run of victories as he looks to overcome a seven point deficit for the top spot of the league table.

Stoke manager Tony Pulis on the other hand will be expecting a vastly improved performance from the last match. Stoke were comfortably beaten 3-0 by Blackburn Rovers last weekend with Benedict McCarthy scoring a brace and Jason Roberts adding the third. Pulis was angry with the defensive mistakes throughout the match and knows that his side will have to be at its best if they are to have any hopes of avoiding a defeat against Manchester United on Friday.

 

 

Manchester United secured a thumping 5-0 victory over Stoke when the two teams met last month when Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace while Michael Carrick, Dimitar Berbatov and Danny Welbeck grabbed one goal each.
