After seeing off the challenge of League Two side Rotherham United in the fourth round, Stoke City will aim to extinguish Derby County’s Carling Cup hopes when the Rams visit the Britannia stadium on Tuesday night. Goals from Glenn Whelan and Danny Pugh were enough for Stoke to beat the Millers in the fourth round. The Potters have scored two or more goals every time they have played in the Carling Cup this season. They had earlier beaten Cheltenham 3-2 in the second round , and Reading on penalties in the third round after drawing 2-2 in normal time.

This is the first time in thirty years that Stoke have reached the quarter finals of the League Cup. The last time they did so, was back in 1978/79.

Derby beat Leeds United 2-1 in the fourth round at Pride Park, with Emanuel Villa and Nathan Ellington scoring within the first twenty minutes for the Rams. Luciano Becchio reduced the deficit for Leeds, but they could not stop Derby from going into their first League Cup quarterfinal since 1990.

Ellington is the highest scorer in the Carling Cup this season, with five goals to his name. Villa is tied with a host of others in second place, with four goals. After beating Leeds, Derby have beaten Sheffield Wednesday, lost to Ipswich and drawn with PNE. First choice centre backs Dean Leacock and Martin Albrechtsen are both looking doubtful, which means that Derby’s defence will have to work extra hard in this game.
