However the second season is always a test for small clubs and manager Tony Pulis will be acutely aware of this. The no-nonsense Pulis managed his meager resources admirably last season and he will have to do an encore this season as well. Sunderland midfielder Dean Whitehead has arrived at the Britannia Stadium and his addition will strengthen the club’s problematic midfield area. Defender Andy Wilkinson and midfielder Salif Diao have signed extensions to their contracts and are likely to remain at the club for the foreseeable future. However City midfielder Seyi Olofinjana has joined rivals Hull on a transfer. Meanwhile Burnley boss Owen Coyle will be aware that the Premiership is an altogether different kettle of fish as compared to the Championship where a tightly knit team managed the unthinkable for fans. Coyle has tried his best to cement vulnerable areas and has signed Ecuador winger Fernando Guerrero from Independiente del Valle on a season long loan. The club has also signed defender Brian Easton from Hamilton. Coyle apparently turned down the chance to manage Celtic to stay with Burnley and will hope his team can repay his loyalty with good results on the pitch.
