Scottish Premier League side Motherwell face the biggest test of their European credentials when they take on former champions Steaua Bucharest in the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round tie in Romania. Steaua beat Hungarian side Ujpest FC 4-1 on aggregate in the second qualifying round. Second half strikes from Romeo Surdu and Bogdan Stancu gave them a 2-0 lead in the first leg in Romania. In Hungary, they put the result of the tie beyond doubt with goals from Janos Szekely and Rafael Grzelak.

Steaua are favourites to progress to the next stage. They have Romanian internationals like Dorian Goian and Banel Nicolita in their ranks. Steaua president Giga Becali has whipped up a storm by   allegedly saying that Motherwell are no match for his side, and the Speedsters “will go through” without trouble.

Motherwell qualified to play Steaua by hammering Albanian side Flamurtari 8-1 in the second leg of their second qualifying round tie. Well dominated the game so thoroughly that onlookers were left wondering how Jim Gannon's side lost the first leg in Albania.

The game at Excelsior Park was already over at the half stage as Motherwell raced to a 6-0 lead. Teenager Jamie Murphy scored a hat trick, and strikes from Paul Slane, Ross Forbes (penalty) and Shaun Hutchinson wiped out Flamurtari's 1-0 lead from the first leg. Forbes and Robert McHugh added two more in the second half as Well ran out 8-1 winners.
